Sailing with youthful spirit on ocean waves—A Glimpse into the Opening Ceremony of the Dalian 2025 FISU University World Cup Football
Dalian, at this moment,
A crisp sea breeze blows,
Seagulls cry in harmony.
On the afternoon of September 17, the Dalian 2025 FISU University World Cup Football kicked off here, with 24 university football teams from 17 countries around the world gathering in this coastal city for a grand celebration of youth and friendship.
“Endless waves swell and fall, accompanied by the graceful dance of seabirds.” As the host poetically remarked, children from the Dalian Children’s Choir ran onto the field holding event mascots, radiating vitality and joy.
One hundred and fifty students from Dalian Maritime University formed the shape of a massive ship braving the waves, “sailing” across the green field. Through intricate choreography, the ship gradually transformed into a symbol of friendship, welcoming football players from around the world.
At the welcoming ceremony,
the performance “Dreams Set Sail”
painted a stirring maritime tableau.
“To protect the grass, we refrained from painting on the field,” explained chief director Lü Yiming during rehearsals.
This restraint, however, resulted in a different kind of grandeur: no flashy stage effects, just the perfect fusion of youthful movement and creative expression.

The athletes’ parade
ignites the first climax.
The team from Chouaib Doukkali University from Morocco entered first, followed by squads from South Korea, Nigeria, Canada, Brazil, France, and others.
These energetic young footballers eagerly pulled out their phones to capture the memorable moments at Dalian Suoyuwan Football Stadium. Spectators in the stands greeted them with warm waves, extending the city’s heartfelt welcome.

When the four Chinese teams from Beihang University, Beijing Normal University, Shanghai University of Sport, and Yanbian University made their entrance as the final contingent, thunderous applause swept the stadium. The home students’ eyes shone with determination to bring glory to their country.
The flags of all 24 teams unfurled slowly like lively musical notes composing a brilliant movement in the night sky.

Performers from the Dalian Song and Dance Theatre and over 240 teachers and students from Dalian Art College presented “Whirling Meteors”, the evening’s most stunning segment. The opening and closing of traditional oil-paper umbrellas mimicked shimmering stars and spinning footballs. The blend of powerful martial arts and graceful umbrella formations embodied the unique appeal of the contemporary China-chic trend. This showcase of traditional culture won admiration from athletes worldwide.
Choreographer Zhang Shuai remarked with pride: “Many students had no prior dance experience, but everyone overcame difficulties to deliver a flawless performance.”

When the theme song “We Want to Win” played, Dalian young composer Tan Yang could hardly contain his excitement courtside. Created specifically for the event, the song blends youthful passion, the warmth of unity, and Dalian’s enthusiasm for embracing the world.
Performers from the Dalian Acrobatic Troupe delivered a vibrant dance performance. Audience members swayed to the rhythm with their phone lights, transforming the stadium into a glittering galaxy.
Outside the venue, Liu Jiaxin from the Dalian Maritime University Flag Guard had just completed his flag-bearing duty. He expressed overwhelming emotion: “As a native of Dalian, it is both our duty and honor to showcase the spirit of Chinese youth on a global stage.”

The ceremony concluded with music and cheers, but the celebration of youth had only just begun.
