The collective rehearsal for the “Dalian 2025 FISU University World Cup Football” opening ceremony proved a resounding success, radiating rich Chinese culture through contemporary China-chic spectacle. Vivid depictions of crashing waves and gliding seagulls showcased Dalian’s distinct maritime character, setting the stage for the city’s triumphant global debut.
On the afternoon of September 15, over 1,200 student performers from Dalian Maritime University (DMU), Dalian Art College, Liaoning University of International Business and Economics, and other universities participated in a collective rehearsal for the opening ceremony.
Themed “Dalian-China-World”, the opening ceremony unfolds in three core segments that progressively transition from showcasing the host city’s unique identity to conveying broader Chinese cultural narratives, ultimately culminating in a message of global resonance. This layered narrative aims to elevate the theme from “City Impression” to “Chinese Expression” and finally to “World Resonance”. For the young performers, this is a story of responsibility and growth, a chance to embody the youthful spirit of Dalian on a world stage.
DMU is responsible for the flag-raising ceremony and the welcoming performance titled “Dreams Set Sail”. Liu Jiaxin, a student majoring in Marine Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is one of the flag bearers. In the flag-raising segment, his critical task is to present the national flag with utmost precision and solemnity, which is a seemingly simple act demanding extraordinary arm strength, core stability, and control. To ensure the national flag remains perfectly unfurled and steady during the procession, Liu and his teammates undertake four hours of daily post-class training, incorporating weight training and planks into their rigorous regimen.

As a native of Dalian, Liu feels immense honor and responsibility participating in a global event in his hometown, especially in such a solemn role. “I am fully confident in completing my task flawlessly,” Liu stated. “I also hope to use this platform to demonstrate the positive spirit of Chinese university students, showcasing that we are not only responsible and strong, but also respectful and warm-hearted.”

Dalian Art College has selected more than 240 students to perform the martial arts-infused dance “Whirling Meteor”, presenting the audience with a rich blend of traditional Chinese style and modern trends. Zhang Shuai, the choreographer, explained: “The performance integrates various art forms such as Wush, dance, and umbrella dance, with ‘Jasmine Flower’ as the background music, showcasing a rich cultural heritage, creating a rich tapestry of cultural heritage. The umbrella formations feature specially designed patterns: blue symbolizing the ocean, green representing nature, and football motifs embodying the spirit of FISU. Our goal is to effectively communicate the allure of Chinese culture and foster cultural exchange.”

To ensure precision, Dalian Art College appointed 14 dance choreography majors as stage supervisors. They adopted a group rehearsal approach, with each group refining movements and formations before combining them into the overall performance, ensuring rehearsals proceed efficiently and in an orderly manner. They practice on the playground every day. Despite intense summer heat, performers have shown unwavering dedication, rehearsing diligently on open fields. Their commitment is profound; even students who briefly fainted from exhaustion insisted on returning to complete their training. Not a single person thought about giving up or quitting.
“Many performers are not dance majors,” Zhang noted. “They’ve overcome significant challenges, transforming from individuals into a cohesive unit, mastering complex movements, and facing hurdles with growing confidence. This is truly a youthful metamorphosis, forged through sweat and perseverance.”
Wang Can, a student from Dalian Art College, added: “Participating in this performance is a tremendous honor and a precious opportunity. I strive for perfection in every detail and movement to leave no room for regret.”
As the world’s spotlight turns to Dalian on September 17, these young faces will take center stage. With boundless enthusiasm and captivating performances, they stand ready to share China’s stories and showcase the vibrant spirit of Chinese youth to a global audience.
